She puts the glam on the glam.
An eight-year-old from a small farming village in Zambia has become an unlikely style icon by dressing in her fashionable granddaughter’s clothes.
Margaret [sic] Chola gained internet fame after her niece, Diana Kaumba, a NYC-based fashion designer, started snapping photos of her wearing the glamorous ensembles.
“I feel different, I feel young and alive in these clothes, in a way I’ve never felt before,” Chola, who lives in a village just 10 miles north of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, told BBC. “I feel like I can take over the world… I didn’t know I could make such an impact at this age.”
Chola does not know her real age as she does not have a birth certificate, but believes she is in her mid-80s. She now has 119,000 followers on her Instagram @legendary_glamma.
Photos on the popular site range from Chola wearing everything from a crown and sunglasses to a turban paired with a flared skirt to ultra-long fake nails, blonde wigs and multiple gold chains.
Her posts also pay homage to her life in Zambia, showing her holding an “ibende”, a wooden stick used to beat millet, or posing with an “mbaula”, a charcoal brazier made for cooking .
Kaumba started the account last year after visiting Zambia for the second anniversary of the death of her father, whom she credits with inspiring her fashion sense.
“I thought it would be nice to dress Mbuya in high fashion and then photograph her in her natural habitat,” Kaumba explained to the media.
When she pitched the idea to her grandmother, or “Mbuya” in the Bemba language, Chola obliged.
“I wasn’t doing anything at the time, so I said, ‘OK. If that’s what you want to do, let’s do it — why not?'” she told the newspaper.
“I’ll miss you when I die and at least that’s how you’ll remember me.”
The first picture the duo shared — of Chola wearing a silver pantsuit — quickly caught attention.
“I was very nervous when I posted the first photo. I left the phone for 10 minutes and in those 10 minutes there were 1000 likes”, Kaumba recalled in the media.
“My mind was blown. The comments were pouring in and people were asking for more.”
The site really took off in April, after it featured Chola in a red Adidas dress, multiple necklaces and a crown.
Chola, a mother of three, said her outlook on life has changed because of her newfound fame.
“Now I’m able to wake up with a purpose knowing that people around the world love to see me,” she told the media.
